Most IR procedures are minimally invasive, typically done under local anesthesia, sometimes with mild sedation. General anesthesia is rarely needed and reserved for complex cases. Procedures generally take about an hour but can range from 15 minutes to longer depending on complexity. Many procedures are outpatient, allowing patients to go home the same day, though some may need overnight observation depending on the treatment and individual health.
Patients should arrange for someone to escort them home after the procedure.
