Fibroid Awareness Month: Understanding Your Options Beyond Surgery

Every year, Fibroid Awareness Month reminds us of an important reality—millions of women are living with uterine fibroids, often silently enduring symptoms that affect their quality of life.

Many women believe that heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or frequent urination are simply a part of ageing or something they must learn to live with. The truth is, these symptoms may be caused by fibroids, and effective treatment options are available.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are extremely common, particularly in women between the ages of 30 and 50.

While some fibroids cause no symptoms, others can lead to:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant or complications during pregnancy

Every woman’s experience is different, which is why treatment should always be personalised.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a hysterectomy is the only solution.

Today, advances in interventional radiology have made it possible to treat many fibroids without removing the uterus.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply feeding the fibroids, causing them to shrink over time. The procedure is performed through a tiny incision, usually requires a short hospital stay, and allows most women to return to their normal activities much sooner than traditional surgery.

For women who wish to preserve their uterus or avoid major surgery, UFE may be an excellent option.

If your periods interfere with your daily life, if you experience persistent pelvic pain, or if you notice symptoms that are affecting your wellbeing, don’t ignore them.

Early assessment allows us to determine whether fibroids are the cause and discuss the most appropriate treatment options based on your individual needs and future family plans.

Fibroid Awareness Month is about encouraging conversations, reducing stigma, and helping women understand that they have choices.

No woman should have to suffer in silence or believe that living with pain is normal.

If you have been diagnosed with fibroids or are experiencing symptoms, speak with your healthcare provider or an interventional radiologist to explore all available treatment options.

The right treatment begins with the right information.
